I need to replace the extension housing trans oil seal on a 89 gmc g2500 van. Anyone know whats involved?

There's really nothing in particular that holds the driveshaft in. Just some splines that slide onto matching splines on the output shaft. Maybe some suction that can be overcome with a little tug or by bumping the driveshaft a little while pulling on it.

It would be best to bolt the extension housing back up, so that it's held in place. Hopefully you didn't ruin the gasket on the front of that, or damage the speedo gear.

Once you get the driveshaft out, use a small hammer and chisel to gently get under the lip of the seal, being careful not to gouge the aluminum extension housing, and work your way around to pry it out.

There are special tools to drive the new one in, but what works really good is if you by an exhaust system adapter or other short straight piece of exhaust pipe, that's just the right size that it fits down in the groove of the part of the seal that actually goes into the tranny a little ways.

Makes it much easier to drive it in straight without bending it. Drive it in until the flange of the seal is flush with the back of the extension housing. No lube or sealer needed on the outside of the seal that goes into the extension housing, but lube the rubber part of the seal, and the slip yoke surface (maybe clean it off too) with ATF before you slide that in.I need to replace the extension housing trans oil seal on a 89 gmc g2500 van.
