I need information on a rear main oil seal located in an automobile. Thanks?

Rear main oil seal:

1. To what system does it belong?

2. Where is the part found?

3. What is the function?

4. How does it work?

5. How much would it cost to replace or repair? (Car model specific please)I need information on a rear main oil seal located in an automobile. Thanks?
1) engine, back of the engine

2) located between the engine and transmission.

3) It is rubber ring wraps around the crankshaft to prevent engine oil from leaking out into transmission and end up in floor.

4)Rubber ring, pressed into the rear engine block. Shaped like donut so it allows crankshaft to spin in the center.

5) For most cars, it is just matter of dropping the transmission (about 10 hour labor) so about $500 - $1000. For Ford SUVs, trucks, the crankshaft must be dripped. So engine must be lifted out - cost would be about $2500.I need information on a rear main oil seal located in an automobile. Thanks?
the rear main of the engine is behind the flywheel ( on a standard tranny ) or the flex plate (on a automatic),

the function is to keep oil in the engine while the crankshaft spins letting the transmission spin, making the car go go go,

it works by applying slight pressure on the smooth surface of the driveshaft keeping the rear bearing oiled but also keeping the oil in the engine,

depends on the shop, call around, it is a major job on most vehicles, Chevy used a two part seal and once oil pan was removed you could loosen the rear bearing cap and push the seal through and push a new one in, most times this seal goes the engine is pretty worn,
Its an external oil seal

Its on the engine crankshaft, rear of the block

It keeps oil from leaking out

A neoprene lip on the seal rubs on the crankshaft creating a seal

Fairly expensive as the transmission must be separated from the engine to get to it.

The web site below describes a rear main seal repair on a rear wheel drive Buick, (one of the easier cars)
