don't bother fixing the filter. get a new one and you'll never worry about it until its time to change your oil again. it isnt worth the trouble!
does anyone know if you can even BUY those seals on oil filters separate from a filter? im betting you cant.

A paper gasket won't work.
As I understand what you are saying, is the housing on the engine block is what is cracked, not the filter.
The oil is under pressure when it goes through the filter, so a paper gasket will just fall apart.
If the housing is truely cracked, maybe some JB weld or something to repair it.
