Leaking small amount of oil, mechanic says it is coming from master seal, what is that??

dime size spot of oil, coming from master seal, nothing you can do about it... that is what i was told. 99 ford explorer 138k 4wd.Leaking small amount of oil, mechanic says it is coming from master seal, what is that??
master seal don't even sound right. perhaps he means the main seal...which is located at the back of the engine. and yes it can be repaired. It's just a matter of changing the seal.





On the other hand...maybe he meant master cylinder...if that's the case then it's the brakes and you have to have it fixed right away.

are you talking about front or rear crankshaft seals ?


they can be fixed but it's expensive, some times auto mechanics


say that someting can't be fix or it will cost you lots of money


to scare the customer and make them sell the car to them (mechanics) and they end up buying a car very cheap and the car had something very easy and cheap to fix my recomendation is go to another shop

Probably means the rear main crankshaft seal.


When you change it, sometimes it may still leak, and some people expect it not to.


If you went to an independent shop, they won't mess with it.


If you would want the leak to stop completely all you can do is gamble and change the seal, though it might not stop
master seal eh? time to switch mechanics before he tries to replace your muffler bearings !

the rear main seal, the most likely culprit, is the seal that surrouds the back of the crankshaft.


It can be fixed, like anything else on a car, but to replace it, the transmission will probably have to be removed, and with the labor price to fix that seal, if it's only leaking a small amount, don't worrry about it. all my cars leak a little from that seal.
This could be a rear main seal or master cylinder leak. The plastic resevoir can leave on the master cylinder but I think you should definitely get a second opinion from an ASE certified mechanic. He will tell you want the problem is and an approxiamate cost. just tell him where the leak is and let him diagnose it.
i own a repair shop,and he must be talking about the rear main seal in the engine and it can be repaired,but you either have to remove the engine,or the transmission ,to get to it,once you do get to it,there not hard to put in its the cost of getting to it,that's so expensive,,good luck,i hope this help,s.
I believe you mean main seal. You have a frant and a rear main seal these are the seals that go on the crank shaft. What doesw he mean nothing you can do about it? Replace the darn thing. but unless it gets worse it really wont hurt anything most cars begin to leak at some point anyway. I have never seen a brand of car that didn't leak. good luck
which engine ,is it front crank seal or rear main,both can be repaired,rear main is not cheap,could be intake manifold seal leaking down back of engine,this is also repairable,or valve covers
